Economics in a European Context
This course is deigned to look at a few topics in depth rather than cover every aspect of the EU. It will require the students to undertake a considerable amount of pre-course reading and activities if they are to derive the greatest benefit from the day.
It will cover in detail the following topics to A2 standard
Background to the EU
~ A brief history of the EU and its institutions
~ The member states and some differences in their economies
~ Advantages and disadvantages of membership of the EU including trade creation and trade diversion
~ The difference between the EU and the Eurozone
The Common Agricultural Policy ~ CAP
An indepth morning on the CAP and its reforms will address the following issues
~ does agriculture need government intervention?
~ a brief history and philosophy of CAP
~ an economic analysis of the previous CAP policies
~ what are the CAP reforms?
~ why are the reforms necessary?
~ what will be the economic and social consequences of the new CAP reforms?
~ have they got the balance right at last?
In the afternoon session, the focus will be on the EU and Externalities
Environmental issues
~ What impact will the EU biofuels policy have for the EU and global economies?
~ What are the strengths and weaknesses of EU CO2 trading scheme?
An to finish if there is time, there may be a short session on the Euro and whether the UK should now consider joining in view of the credit crunch and the UK's current economic situation.
